In an unprecedented event, the 2008 NBCC award in poetry was shared between Juan Felipe Herrera (Half the World in Light: New and Selected Poems) and August Kleinzahler (Sleeping It Off in Rapid City: Poems, New and Selected). Poetry committee chair Rigoberto González announced the award to Herrera and, on behalf of Kleinzahler, Jonathan Galassi of FSG.

González discussed Herrera’s Half the World in Light earlier at 30 Books/30 Days. In the same series, board member Kevin Prufer wrote on Kleinzahler’s Sleeping It Off in Rapid City.
