In an unprecedented event, the 2008 NBCC award in poetry was shared between Juan Felipe Herrera (Half the World in Light: New and Selected Poems) and August Kleinzahler (Sleeping It Off in Rapid City: Poems, New and Selected). Poetry committee chair Rigoberto González announced the award to Herrera and, on behalf of Kleinzahler, Jonathan Galassi of FSG.

Gonz├ílez discussed Herrera’s Half the World in Light earlier at 30 Books/30 Days. In the same series, board member Kevin Prufer wrote on Kleinzahler’s Sleeping It Off in Rapid City.
