Finalists for the National Book Critics Circle Awards to Be Announced at Housing Works Event

On Saturday, January 24, 2009, the National Book Critics Circle will announce the finalists for its forthcoming book awards, covering books published in 2008. Books are competing in the areas of fiction, general nonfiction, biography, autobiography, poetry, and criticism. Winners will be announced on Thursday, March 12, 2009, at a ceremony held at the New School in New York.

The finalists will be announced at an event at the Housing Works Bookstore Café, located at 126 Crosby Street, between Houston & Prince. The event begins at 7:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Housing Works is a nonprofit bookstore, café, and event venue whose proceeds go to support Housing Works, Inc., a nonprofit service agency that provides housing, healthcare, job placement, advocacy, and more to homeless New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS.

The National Book Critics Circle, founded in 1974, is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization consisting of over 800 active book reviewers who are interested in honoring quality writing and communicating with one another about common concerns. It is managed by a 24-member all-volunteer board of directors.
