Join the NBCC for These Upcoming Events (and Bring Your Friends)

Join the National Book Critics Circle at Lit Crawl NYC on Saturday September 11, 2010, at 8 pm.

Details here. Follow up with the NBCC "Name that Author" contest at Brooklyn Book Festival, Sunday, September 12, 5 pm on the Main Stage, Borough Hall. Past champions Martha Southgate and Brigid Hughes square off against critics Eric Banks, David Haglund and Steve Kellman, with Brooklyn Rail's John Reed emcee. (The quiz is based on quotations from NBCC award winners and finalists in fiction over the past 36 years).

There is so much coming up this fall, it's a good time to join (or renew your membership in or urge friends to join) the very affordable ($15 for students,$25 for associates--authors, editors, publishers, passionate readers, $40 for reviewers with 3 links over past year) and rewarding NBCC. Mingle at parties and literary events, participate in awards decisions, maybe even run for the board, nominate yourself for a Balakian or nominate someone for the lifetime achievement award, recently won by Joyce Carol Oates, PEN American Center, Bill Henderson of Pushcart Press. Write guest posts for Critical Mass, be eligible as an NBCC Featured Review on Powells selection. Take part in an NBCC  Reads conversation or a panel on the next decade in book culture.  Go to our membership page for details.

September 21, 2010, NBCC at the Fall for the Book Festival at George Mason University, with Rick Moody, Sarah Courteau (Wilson Quarterly), Allan Fallow, features editor at AARP The Magazine, Britt Peterson (Foreign Policy) and moderator Bethanne Patrick talking about the future of book culture.

September 22, NBCC Reads at The Center for Fiction, NYC, Gary Giddins, Lore Segal and Brenda Wineapple in conversation with James Marcus re their favorite books on conjugal love.

October 9th & 10th, 2010. NBCC at the Wordstock Book Fair @ the Oregon Convention Center,777 NE MLK Jr Blvd. Portland, Oregon. NBCC board member David Biespiel moderates a discussion of the future of book culture with Bookslut managing editor Michael Schaub, writer and publisher Matthew Stadler, and others.



November 3, 2010. National Book Critics Circle and Graywolf Press at the Minneapolis Public LIbrary: A Reading by NBCC Award Winners and Finalists, including Eula Biss, Marlon James, and Stephen Burt. A conversation about criticism in 2010 after the reading will be moderated by Graywolf editor Jeff Shotts.



November 3, 2010. Book Passage, San Francisco. NBCC Reads conversation with Oscar Villalon, Jason Roberts, Michael Lukas.



November 11, 2010, 7 pm. National Book Critics Circle at The Center for Fiction, 17 East 47th Street, New York, NY. Fiction Writers/Book Critics:What Happens When You Do Both?  Jane Ciabattari, Lev Grossman, Roxana Robinson, in conversation with Noreen Tomassi.

January 22, 2011. National Book Critics Circle Awards Finalists Announcement (plus winners of the Sandrof Award for Lifetime Achievement and the winner of the Balakian Award for Excellence in Reviewing).



February 4, 2011, 1:30 pm. National Book Critics Circle Reading at the AWP. NBCC President Jane Ciabattari hosts a reading by NBCC awards winners and finalists Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Edward P. Jones, Jayne Anne Phillips, Elizabeth Strout, and Colson Whitehead.



March 9, 2011. National Book Critics Circle Awards: Finalists Reading at The New School, New York, NY.
