NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE ESTABLISHES EMERGING CRITICS INITIATIVE

By Admin

The National Book Critics Circle is launching the NBCC Emerging Critics Fellowship, which aspires to identify, nurture, and support the development of the next generation of book critics. The NBCC can offer passionate critics looking for more experience valuable training and guidance. The NBCC will also help Fellows identify new reviewing opportunities as some outlets shrink and others develop. Members of the NBCC adhere to a Code of Ethics which will be shared with the first class of Emerging Critics.

Over the course of the one-year fellowship, emerging critics will receive:

-An opportunity to partake in the ongoing conversation about the craft of reviewing, and ethical questions and concerns emerging as the publishing landscape changes.

-Active mentorship from members of the Emerging Critic Initiative Committee, as well as other Board members. This includes editing advice on drafts as well as counsel regarding career development.

-Access to NBCC blog Critical Mass, as contributors of both original work and previously published work in weekly-roundup.

-Dues-free membership to the NBCC, admission to NBCC events, and annual reception for one year.

-Applications due: Jan 27, 2017 and we expect to announce the first class by March 5, 2017.

To apply:  Each writer must submit a resume, three writing examples, a 300-500-word statement of purpose, and names/contact information for two references.

We are seeking a broad range of applicants, and as we build an annual class of critics will be selecting those who have demonstrated a genuine interest and commitment to engaging in critical conversation about books.

For our inaugural class, we anticipate selecting 5 emerging critics. For more information on how to apply, please see: https://nbcc.submittable.com/submit
